Located in a small alley in Hanoi, the 3-story house with an area of 80m² owned by Ms. Lan Thảo still impresses and receives high praise from many people. Not only is it admired for being a compact yet elegant and charming home, but many are also amazed by the simple interior design that maximizes functional use.
Stepping into the small house, the main color scheme of white and wood makes the space feel spacious and airy. The simple furniture helps family members feel relaxed and comfortable.
With the desire for every space in the house to welcome fresh air and natural light, Ms. Lan Thảo decided to build many windows and balconies.
Although located right in the bustling center of Hanoi, because of her love for Đà Lạt, she transformed the small house to fully embody the dreamy city’s atmosphere. Ms. Thảo’s house was just recently completed and has been lived in for a little over a month. Although everything is not yet fully finished or complete, it is still a dream home for many.
To build a perfect house that truly meets their expectations, Ms. Lan Thảo’s family decided to entrust their home design and construction to Mili Home Architecture and Interior Company.
The time from demolishing the old house to completion was eight and a half months. Ms. Lan Thảo cheerfully admits that she is a picky person, so the design and construction team also committed to a lifetime warranty for her and her husband’s home.
Sharing about the design concept of this unique house with the reporter, designer Phan Giang Nam said that the house was designed in the Scandinavian style.
The Scandinavian style originates from the name of a region in Northern Europe called the Scandinavian Peninsula. This interior design style uniquely combines three elements: minimalism – functionality – bringing modern beauty while still being close to nature (with natural light, ventilation, and greenery).
The distinctive features commonly seen in Scandinavian-style homes are simplicity, coziness, and elegance. Additionally, neutral tones such as white, gray, navy blue, and off-white create a harmonious and soothing atmosphere, combined with simple yet fully functional furniture pieces.
Especially, this blend creates a feeling of comfort, peace, and relaxation for everyone. That’s why Scandinavian interior design is not only popular among young people but also highly appreciated by middle-aged individuals.
According to designer Phan Giang Nam, Lan Thảo’s house uses three main materials: wood, stone, and leather. Wood and leather are used for the furniture, while stone and tiles are used for decoration and cladding.
The main colors in this house are the brown of the wood, the white of the stone and wall paint, along with some touches of gray. The lighting employs neutral tones to create a warmer and cozier atmosphere.
The first floor of the house includes a living room, kitchen and dining area, laundry space, the grandmother’s bedroom, and a shared bathroom connected to the bedroom to make it easier for the elderly to move around.
The living room features a prominent gray sofa set and a large TV. Additionally, some decorative green plants help make the space feel airy and fresh, complemented by a wooden TV stand and shelving units.
The dining area is connected to the living room, designed impressively with a wooden dining table and chairs for adults, along with a smaller set for children. The kitchen cabinets are in white and gray tones, creating a clean and spacious atmosphere.
The staircase is designed with a gentle slope to make it easier for family members to move around, highlighted by a wooden floor that is both simple and elegant.
The second floor space of the house is designed simply yet elegantly. It includes a master bedroom with a walk-in closet, a workspace, and a private bathroom. The space is connected to a storage room and balcony through large sliding doors.
The bedroom for the two sons features two separate beds, with a skylight window providing natural light and a ventilation window near the study desk.
The third floor of the house is a common living area with a kitchen and a spacious balcony, designed for hosting standing parties and weekend family gatherings.
One of the standout features of the house is that every room has windows to let in natural light and bring the indoors closer to nature.
According to designer Phan Giang Nam, given the house’s terrain and location, the architectural design features simple geometric shapes to create a functional layout. The structure uses a steel frame and lightweight concrete system, which makes the construction process very convenient and straightforward.
“As for the shapes inside the house, the design incorporates varying heights to create a cozy space. Although the house has 3 floors, it only has one landing, giving the feeling of a two-story house,” emphasized Mr. Giang Nam.
For the homeowner, Ms. Lan Thảo, this place is the heartfelt creation of her family, so she feels very pleased and satisfied with the design as well as the interior in all the rooms.
